How do fortunes take steep turns in a tournament? Who would know it better than the Rajasthan Royals? After leading the points table for over a month, they hit a rough patch, gradually slipping to the third spot and eventually, getting knocked out. They appeared to be the most balanced side at one point in the tournament but suddenly, things started falling apart.

After a 4-game losing streak, RR bounced back with a much-needed win in the Eliminator, against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, they couldn’t beat the Sunrisers in the Qualifier 2 and were knocked out.

Now, ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auctions, here are six players that the Royals could possibly retain for the upcoming season:

    Sanju Samson

Skipper Sanju Samson led the Royals to their second playoffs in three years after the team had reached the finals in 20222

In fact, Samson is the only Royals captain to have taken the team to the playoffs twice, and last season he also equalled the late Shane Warne’s record of 31 wins with the franchise as captain.

Samson is also a prolific batter, having finished fifth in the overall list of run scorers last season as well, having amassed 531 runs from 15 innings, including five fifties, the joint-most by any batter in IPL 2024.

He could be retained for around Rs 18 crore by the Royals.

    Sandeep Sharma

Rajasthan Royals can retain Sandeep Sharma under the uncapped player category for just around Rs 4 crore, since the 31-year-old pacer, who made his debut for India in 2015, has not made an apperance for the national side over the last 5 years.

Despite the age factor, Sandeep has proven to be a consistent wicket-taker for his franchises, especially with the new ball. The pacer has scalped 23 wickets in his 23 matches for the franchise and in IPL 2024, he scalped 13 wickets in 11 apperances.

    Yuzvendra Chahal

It’s almost a no-brainer to want to retain the highest wicket-taker in IPL history. Chahal, for all his snubs on the international level, has proven consistently over time that he is a lethal spin option to possess in any team.

The leg-spinner has played 160 games in the IPL and has picked up 205 wickets at an average of 22.44. In the three seasons for the Royals, he has picked up a phenomenal 66 wickets, having scalped 18 wickets in 15 games last season.

Chahal could be retained for around Rs 11 crore.

    Riyan Parag

Riyan Parag and Samson, both non-openers, finished IPL 2024 with 500-plus runs. It was the first time that two of the Royals’ batters entered the 500-run club in the same season.

Parag was the Royals’ top-scorer this season, third overall, with 573 runs from 14 outings with an excellent average of 52.09 and a strike rate of 149.21. Parag also had four fifties to his name.

RR can retain Parag for around Rs 11 crore.

    Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the 22-year-old opener, despite a moderate IPL 2024 season, is expected to be retained.

The trailblazing youngster has proven at the international stage that he is truly one to watch for, and for RR to give up on such a talent would be inexplicable.

RR can retain Jaiswal at a price of Rs 14 crore.

The Kiwi veteran is also expected to be a lock for a retention spot as well. His established lethality with the new ball in the powerplay and his ability to swing the ball either ways has made Boult one of the best strike bowlers in the league.

Since joining the Royals back in 2022, Boult has been a valuable asset, claiming 45 wickets in 41 matches over three seasons. His performance in the last season was particularly impressive, with 16 wickets in 15 innings.
